Unifi Dream Machine SE
The Heart of My Home Network
Overview
Everything in my lab — the home server, the Pis, the smart home gear, the cloud tunnels — flows through one box: the Unifi Dream Machine Special Edition from Ubiquiti. It's my router, firewall, network controller, and PoE switch all in one.
Why I Built It
A homelab full of experiments needs a network that can keep up — and keep things separated. Consumer routers fall over the moment you want proper VLANs or real firewall rules. The UDM-SE gave me enterprise-style networking at home, with the polish of the Unifi ecosystem.
What It Does
- Gateway and firewall for the whole network, with rules I actually wrote and understand
- VLAN segmentation — IoT gadgets, lab experiments, and trusted devices each live in their own network
- Intrusion detection and prevention (IDS/IPS) watching the traffic
- Built-in Unifi controller managing the rest of my Unifi gear
- PoE ports powering access points and devices without extra bricks
Key Lessons Learned
- Network segmentation done properly — why your smart bulbs shouldn't see your NAS
- Writing firewall rules that block what you mean to block (and nothing you didn't)
- How much smoother life gets when the network is boring and reliable
