Overview
Home Assistant is the open-source brain that ties my whole smart home together. Instead of six different apps that don't talk to each other, everything lands in one place — with automations that make the house feel like it's actually paying attention.
What It Controls
- Lights & smart plugs — bulbs, plugs, and switches, all automated and app-free
- Sensors & climate — temperature, motion, and door sensors feeding into heating control
- Cameras & security — camera feeds and presence detection in one view
- Automations & dashboards — scenes, routines, and dashboards that show the whole house at a glance
Why I Built It
Every smart device wants its own cloud account and its own app. Home Assistant keeps control local, private, and unified — and honestly, writing automations is the fun part. Lights that react to motion, heating that reacts to the weather, and a dashboard that makes it all feel like mission control.
Key Lessons Learned
- Device integrations — getting gear from different ecosystems to play nicely
- Automation logic: triggers, conditions, and not flashing the lights at 3am
- Local-first smart home design: less cloud, more control
